Virtual RealityIn Rhode Island

The newest weapon in the fight against opioid addiction is virtual reality (VR) technology that can help ease patients’ chronic pain and provide alternatives to popping pills.

Do you feel like you’ve tried every avenue possible to reduce your pain? We hear you. And we’ve got some good news – a new weapon to aid in your fight.

Virtual Reality (VR) is an innovative answer to chronic pain. Our groundbreaking new VR platform, developed in partnership with BehaVR, will provide you with a visually engaging experience designed to help you take control of the pain you’ve been living with for weeks, months, or years.

How Does Virtual Reality Work?

Our VR technology is a convenient, comfortable experience. When you’re wearing the goggles, you’ll be presented with both animation and videos designed to help you better learn, understand, and retain information about pain and its perception. Your physical therapist will integrate VR into one of your regular, activity-based physical therapy sessions, allowing them to guide you through the treatment and continually monitor your progress.

This cutting-edge program is exclusive to Pappas OPT and unique in our region, and our therapists have been specialty trained and certified in Pain Neuroscience Education and VR technology. Frequently Asked Questions

  • A physical therapy visit lasts about 40-60 minutes. The actual contents of the visit vary based on your diagnosis/need, but typically what happens is:

    1. You check in with the receptionist, make any appointments necessary, and we discuss your health insurance benefits with you.
    2. You go into the gym. You can change clothes if you need to, then begin therapy.
    3. You perform 6-8 various exercises and stretches. These can include therapeutic band exercises, light body weight exercises, or minimal weights. The stretches will promote strength, stability, improved range of motion, and pain relief.
    4. We can initiate other techniques to include manual work, taping, cupping, and dry needling as needed.
    5. The therapist makes recommendations based on your progress. These can include altering the frequency of visits, making additions/alterations to your home exercise plan, or things to do before your next visit.
  • We recommend budgeting 40-60 minutes for a typical therapy session. The only exception to this will be your first visit, which can take about 20 minutes longer due to the physical therapy evaluation your therapist will provide. We also recommend showing up about 10-15 minutes early to your first visit. This way, you can complete the paperwork before your visit time and streamline the process.

  • If we are asking you to do something that is hurting too much, let us know! Physical therapy should not be severely painful. It is not common to be so sore that patients are in pain or it affects their daily life. If this ever happens during or after an appointment, let us know and we will adapt your program.

  • During your initial evaluation, your therapist may ask you a number of questions to determine what the cause of your pain is. This can include questions about your sleep habits, activity level, and work environment. They will also ask for a medical history, and then typically ask direct questions about where and when you experience pain.

Jasnoor K.

Pappas OPT Patient

I knew Pappas OPT would be the right fit for me when I was here for my first clinical affiliation. The focus on company culture and continuing education is what helped me make my decision to apply. What really helped solidify my decision was when I voiced my desire to build a pelvic health program, which was not in place at the time.  I'm grateful that I have the opportunity to continue to grow with this company.

I joined Pappas OPT in 2017 as a new graduate and could not be more happy with the sense of community and shared passion for patient-centered care that comes naturally to this company. Pappas OPT has been a wonderful company to help lead me on my own path as a Physical Therapist. I have achieved more in 2 years than I expected to in 5 thanks to the endless support from Pappas OPT.
